Stress is a major issue for everyone and top home based businesses are not immune to this, although some stressful situations are eliminated by working from home others can be created. However, much of this stress can be avoided by adopting a few procedures thus ensuring both owner and business remains healthy.

It is important to recognize that stress does exist; however, it is just as important to remember that it can be reduced or in some cases, avoided.

The starting point is to identify as many possible stressful situations as you possibly can and at the same time realizing that there are always those times when unforeseen things happen that throw us into a tailspin! Not only will you have work related stress, but family and friends create stress for you too.

Once you have done that you can now start working out ways in which to handle these in a cool, calm and collected way when they occur. Yes, they will happen, and knowing that they will gives you the upper hand to be prepared and have a “procedure manual” to deal with them.

Each situation will require a different approach but some basic procedures can be applied to all.

When a stressful time occurs, take a deep breath and try to relax. Try to remain happy and cheerful as this will enable you to have a clearer mind. I do say try, because I do know that this is really hard to do, but if you keep practicing it will become easier.

Having a clearer mind will enable you to better handle any situation. In dealing with highly emotional and stressful times such as family illnesses or accidents, try removing the emotion out of the situation and try to be a little cold hearted if possible. This is not easy to do but if you practice it then you will find it is a great help. By letting the emotion take over you will not be able to function which is extremely important in life-threatening situations especially with loved ones.

To avoid stress caused by work overload, have a schedule and diary and plan everything out. Know when your deadlines and commitments are. By doing this you can organize your various tasks and duties to be done in a timely, well structured manner without any nasty surprises. Ensure that this schedule can be flexible enough to allow for any unforeseen circumstances. Do not overload yourself with too many tasks and duties. You can say no to requests from others because you and you alone are in charge of your schedule.

Plan your work so that you are on top of your tasks and do not allow them to be on top of you as by doing this you will have much better control of the workflow.

Ensure that you have plenty of rest breaks including having time away from the work in which you do something special for yourself and getting totally away from everything even for a short time. During this special time, do not allow yourself to even think about your troubles, make yourself think of pleasurable things instead.

If you are getting overwhelmed with work, then think about getting some help. This can be done by hiring someone to do some of the work for you or getting the family involved. If this is not possible, just take things one day at a time, do the work in small steps, multitask wherever possible and cut down the actual amount you do by reprioritizing your tasks and goals.

Talking to others is a great stress breaker, so do not bottle things up – find someone whom you trust to talk to, even if you have to go to a professional it is far better than you keeping quiet and getting more stressed out.

There are other ways to break the stress such as having a pet, spending time with loved ones or having a creative and relaxing hobby. Please do not turn to drugs or alcohol for help as these will only make things worse in the long run.

Also ensure that you take care of yourself by eating properly, drinking plenty of water and exercising.

Whatever the situation is, do not worry too much about it, and just tackle it head on which you can do because you do have the skills, talents and ability to deal with it. Then, when you have survived it, give yourself a little reward.

Looking after a team of people is a very responsible task. In doing so, it is important to remember that you are dealing with people and not machines; therefore, you must treat them with dignity and respect.

The first and most important rule in handling a team of people is to always treat them as you yourself want to be treated. Remember how you have been treated by bosses in the past – some good and some bad. Which bosses did you really like and put in that extra effort for? Was it the boss who was rude and aggressive or the one who was kind and gave you recognition for all of your efforts?

However, before you can start dealing with your team you need to get a team together. Before advertising and recruiting people set out some guidelines of what you are looking for in a team member. Then do another set of guidelines on how you are going to look after these special people.

You should recruit people who are keen to work with you and are willing to learn, even if they are actually going to be in business on their own they still can be part of a team. Being in a team has greater benefits for a home business owner as it provides them with training, backup and support as well as preventing that lonely feeling, which will be even more evident to them if they have been used to working in large businesses.

Once you have recruited a person into your team, you will give them training on how the business is run especially on how you do it and you will do it in a similar format to the training you received when you joined. However, if you did not receive training or you feel that the training your received was lacking in some areas you now have the opportunity to improve the system and ensure that your members are given good quality training.

Good quality training is extremely important as this is the foundation of the business. If the team member does not how to do the work then they will quickly give up and you will lose all that valuable time and effort as well as losing a potentially extremely valuable person.

Have plenty of patience whilst training as every one learns at different paces – some will learn quickly, whilst others will take that little bit longer. Give plenty of praise and encouragement, especially when they are struggling with an issue. Ensure that you give positive feedback and not negative as you want to be uplifting to your people and not drag their spirits down making them feel as if they are useless.

Do not just train your members and let them get on with the job. Give them ongoing support, assistance and guidance. Keep in touch with them to see how they are getting along. Listen carefully to them and their needs. Be happy and cheerful too when talking with them as they may be feeling a little glum and hearing a cheery voice always works wonders and is so uplifting.

Training can take a few forms from the initial and ongoing one-on-one lessons to having group training with all the members of the team.

With group training, empower your members to input other ideas and tips that they have learnt along the way. After all, these team members could also now be team leaders themselves.

You should also provide a backup system for your members as everyone needs a break from time to time and illness does strike us all at some time, so it is a huge relief to know that the business will continue whilst we are out of action. This is what team work is all about.

Always be available for your team members by providing them with a variety of ways in which they can contact you such as phone, emails or skype. Of course there will be times when you cannot speak with them, so in this case, provide them with either other team members they can get in touch with or give them a time when you will be available and a system where they can leave messages for you so that you can contact them as soon as you are able.

Looking after a team is really very rewarding. Ensure that you take the time to look after your own team of people and that way you will have top home based businesses!

Customers are very valuable to all businesses and home businesses are no exception. Therefore they should be treated with respect, dignity and professionalism.

When dealing with your customers, think about the times when you were not treated well, such as when you went into a store and were ignored or the staff were rude to you. How did you feel? Did you go back to that store?

The same applies to your customers. When they come to you to purchase your products or service, you should always greet them warmly, no matter how you are feeling personally. A warm, happy smile and lovely greeting always works wonders. They may be already in a sad or bad mood because of other circumstances so they would appreciate a bright, happy face – they do not want to be greeted with a grumpy person. Do not burden them with your own troubles as they probably have enough of their own.

If you are busy with another customer or on the phone when the customer walks in, do not ignore them. Excuse yourself from your current customer for a moment, turn to the new customer and acknowledge them and let them know that you will soon be with them. If you are on the phone then look directly at the customer, smile at them and give them an indication that you will be with them shortly. It is so rude to simply ignore your customers to chat to others or do other work; after all, they are there to give you business and not the other way around.

Treat them as if they were the only person in the world, and, in fact they are, at that particular time, they only one for you.

If the customer has a bad experience with you, not only will they not come back, but they will tell others of their experience so you will lose future prospective customers. Word of mouth advertising is the best method available to get customers so you do not want to waste one opportunity.

Always answer the telephone within 5 rings as there is nothing worse for a customer to hear that ring-ring-ring again and again. If it goes on too long then they will assume that no one is there and hang up – never to return. They will then simply ring your competitor. Your greeting should be a happy, pleasant and welcoming one. Have a smile on your face when you answer as this does reflect in your voice. Ensure that the tone of your voice is pleasant too – do not be grumpy and do not proceed to tell them what a bad day you are having as they are probably having one too.

Follow up on promises to get back to customers when you say you will. It is imperative that promises that are made are kept. If you know that you will not be able to get back to them, then do not say you will. Always do everything you say in a professional and timely manner.

If you do not have the goods or service that the customer wants or needs at that particular time you may want to direct them to where they can get them. This may not seem a good idea; however, you will reap the rewards later.

Do not try to make too much money out of the customer. Ask the customer what they need and listen very carefully so that you can provide them with the ideal solution. Customers will appreciate you so much more if you try to work out a solution for them that will save them money in the long run. For example, say you sell computers, then do not sell them the dearest model that has all the bells and whistles on it that they never need, instead inform them that a cheaper model would be better for them because as they do not have a need for these items it is better for them not to pay precious money for these options. We all appreciate it when salespeople actually look after how much comes out of our wallets and how much stays in.

The most important way to have good customer service is to treat your customers in the manner in which you like to be treated.

There are so many great ways to earn extra money at home using your computer, many of which can fit into any hectic lifestyle. However, some methods do have things to be carefully evaluated before committing yourself to them.

The biggest item to be wary of is that there are many offers available on the Internet and not all deliver what they promise. Some of these also ask for money and ask some even you for your personal details including banking information. It is important to protect yourself and your money so be very, very careful and assess each offer thoroughly before supplying any of your personal information or paying money.

The Internet has many great ways available in which to earn extra money, but there are also a variety of other ways to achieve the same result by using your computer at home.

The greatest benefit is that you can work your own hours when and how you like to fit in around your lifestyle. You may, for example, have one week relatively free while the next one or two are extremely busy so you could spend the free week working solidly to build up your cash.

Doing surveys is a fun method of earning cash, however whilst some people do earn a decent income this way, there are not too many. Also, you are not always paid in cash as some companies compensate you for your time by giving you points which you redeem for products or vouchers, whilst others will put your name in prize draws, and others will get you to elect a charity to receive a donation.

If you are computer savvy and know how to program then you could write programs or design websites or blogs for people or companies. Again these are advertised on the Internet and you may have to put in a quote or bid to get the job, but once you do, and if you do a great job, then you could get more work from the same source or they may even recommend you to others they know who are looking for people who do quality work, are capable and reliable.

Another great method is to do Internet Marketing yourself, by creating a business selling a product or service of your own or those of other people or companies. Some companies will even supply training, support and marketing systems to you.

Many top home based businesses use article marketing as a way to get customers for their products and services, and if they have a website or blog, it is a great method to get customers to go there. Of course, there are other people who just like to write for the pleasure of it to share their knowledge and expertise with others.

Articles can be written in many different formats such as How To’s, Lists, Pros and Cons, Answering a Question, and Survey Results to name just a few. No matter what format you use, all have rules that the publishers require, however some of these rules vary between publishers, for example the length of the article, so go to their sites and find out what they are and adhere to them otherwise all of your hard work, time and effort could be wasted because you may have to either rewrite or modify your article, or worst of all, have it completely rejected and not published.

To get started write down a list of topics or subjects which all relate to your home business.

Create a template on your computer’s word processing program for the various sections of the article which gives you a framework to work with so that you will not forget a required section. It also will help to speed up the publishing process as you will not have to try to remember or repeatedly retype what you had already worked out for your article.

When writing the title, remember that this is the first item that is read so make it catchy and to the point. The article itself must then be on what the title says as you don’t want to mislead your readers. For example if you called an article How To Milk A Cow and you actually wrote on Training A Dog, your readers would not be happy and from then on would not trust any articles from you. The same would apply if you said you were giving 10 tips and only gave 8.

Write an outline by writing down the various topics of the article in the order in which you want to raise them, reworking them as you go so that you will have a clearer overview of the article and see that it is flowing as you would like.

It is important to keep your reader in mind as you are writing for a specific group of people. If the article is relates to say a medical issue and you are writing it for medical professionals then you would use medical terminology. However, if you were writing it for the general public you would leave this terminology out and simplify the article so that they could understand it.

Allow yourself plenty of time to write your articles and get yourself in a great frame of mind to do so. Do not try to write when you are tired or have a lot of other things to do. You need to be in a clear and refeshed state of mind otherwise you will not be able to write anything.

If you do get stuck just imagine that you are chatting to a friend or potential customer who has asked for your advice regarding that topic you are writing about. This will enable you to write more naturally. Or take a break. Taking regular breaks allows you to refresh and rest your mind. By struggling on you will only get frustrated, it is better to come back again later as you will actually write more efficiently.

To avoid or reduce potential pressure or stress in getting articles written and published, use your template to layout the outlines for other articles, so that if you do get stuck on one and have that dreaded writer’s block, you can just move onto another.

It is extremely important to proof read your article and this should be done several times. Firstly as you are writing the article, stop periodically and read what you have written, check the grammar, spelling, punctuation, the dreaded typos, that it has a good flow, sounds right and that it meets with the publisher’s rules.

Read it again as soon as you have finished, leave it for a few hours or days and then look at it again. Finally check it just before you submit it for publishing.

Internet Marketing, also known as i-marketing, web-marketing, online-marketing or e-marketing involves the promoting and selling of products and services using a variety of tools available on the Internet which are relatively inexpensive, however, it is also important to watch out for hidden costs.

There are many great things about using the Internet. The Internet is a huge potential customer base of people who are already searching for a particular product or service, thus you can then target your marketing specifically to these people. However, there are a great many processes involved which require a lot of your time and effort in learning and setting them up so if you will want to go into this very slowly and carefully. There are professionals who are very experienced in doing all this who can guide and teach you but they do charge a great deal of money but this can be well worth the money. Many of these advertise on the web but be careful not to sign up too quickly as there are the good as well as the bad.

Owners of successful top home based businesses know the importance of being organized and structured so that they can manage their resources efficiently for greater productivity and profitability. Some of these areas are their time, paperwork, office stationery, equipment, computer files and working area. They also know the importance of being organized with the family and household duties as it benefits their home business, their family as well as their health and sanity! There are a variety of methods and tools readily available that can assist you to get organized too.

Time is the most valuable resource that you have so you should set out a timetable or schedule so that you can maximize the amount of work you do whilst using the least amount of time as possible. A timetable and schedule enables you to be dedicated to get everything done in a timely manner and thus you will be on top of your tasks and you will not feel as if you are overwhelmed by it all and want to give it all away!

Start by putting in all your regular commitments, your no-work times such as important family events and ensure that you put in your rest times as you need some time for yourself to unwind and be rested and refreshed too. Then put in all of the household tasks in their relevant timeslots for example the garbage is collected on Friday so on Thursday the refrigerator is cleared out whilst getting the evening meal. Now you will be able to put in your home business tasks by the time needed, deadline and importance. If you don’t know how long a particular task takes so that you can allocate a timeslot for it time yourself whilst doing it. Also look at tasks that can be done together, for example do the computer backup and virus scan whilst getting the evening meal or playing with the children. Plan tasks too so that they can flow into others, for example Tuesday is shopping day so on Monday get the fliers done so that you can put them on the noticeboards whilst you are at the shops. Also life always likes to give us unexpected events to keep us on our toes so ensure that your schedule is flexible enough so that you can cope and be able to handle these situations much better when they occur. Constantly review, update and modify your schedule as lives are never stable and consistent.

To organize all of your bits and pieces and stationery items you can put all similar items together using various containers. There are many readily available in different sizes and colors. Of course, if funds are tight then you could you reuse containers, jars, tins and boxes that come your way, or get them from any shop that sells such items cheaply or go to garage sales. If you are crafty then you can redecorate them. Then label them by using a label maker or get the children busy with their creative skills to create some unique ones for you by using paper or cardboard which can then be cut to size and applied using glue or Sellotape. Once these are done you can then place these in a variety of places and ways, for example in a cupboard or on shelves depending upon what furniture and space you have.

For your paperwork you can use a variety of methods to file and organize these so that you can access all of your information readily. There are, of course, filing cabinets which is one of the best but if this is not suitable for you then get some lever arch type files or cardboard archive boxes. For the information that you need to refer to often, you can use plastic display folders.

The files on your computer also should be organized so that you can find what you need easily and quickly. Spend a little time thinking and planning this out, but don’t try to get it to work perfectly straight away as you can modify the structure as you go!

There are many varied marketing tools and methods for top home based businesses and they range in price from free to very, very expensive, and some require more time and effort from you, so you will need to work out which ones are best for you.

Business cards are a great way to advertise. They are small but can contain enough detail about you and your product or service plus you can always have some on hand wherever you go. One lady I know has printed cards for her young son to hand out promoting the family business as he really enjoys being involved and tells everyone he meets about the business. Printing prices can vary due to paper, the number of colors, number to be printed and if printing is to be on both sides, so shop around and compare what you are paying for. There are printing websites that offer free cards so look there as well but beware of any hidden costs!

Other printed items include fliers, banners, lawn signs, car signs and various other items such as pens, mugs, t-shirts, key rings, mouse mats so you may want to use some of these things as giveaway items to potential customers. Again, prices vary so do your homework.

If you have a computer and printer and know how to use certain software programs then you can design and print your own fliers and cards doing only as many as and when you need, thus saving money, but you will be using your own time and energy which may be better utilized in your top home based businesses. There are many different types and sizes from which to choose. The social media sites are another great way, however, you must not deliberately advertise – it must be done very, very subtly, so be careful otherwise your accounts on the sites will be shut down plus you will alienate your potential customers instead of attracting them. You can also purchase customer contacts called leads via companies over the Internet who have put out questionnaires for people who are looking for certain things. Prices vary here too depending upon the type of lead or how old they are. These are a quick and great way to get customers as these are people who are already wanting a particular product or service.

Another way is to have a blog or website and then use various methods such as writing articles, doing videos and using the social media as well as the methods I mentioned earlier to promote and get customers to it. There are many and varied costs to this system and there is a lot of hard work involved.

Now that I have given you some ideas on marketing for your top home based businesses you now need to sit down and investigate them, checking them against your budget. Work out a marketing plan that uses more than one at a time as not all methods work well at the same time. Continually review and change it so that you can reach as many customers as possible and make adjustments as required.
